Curriculum

Camp Jackson staff teach a range of subjects as part of a camp program. Our lessons are designed to meet many of the Colorado model content standards. Our focus areas are science and geography. These are primarily covered in our Animal Science, Forest Ecology, Geology, Orienteering and Water Cycle lessons.

Forest Ecology The group will go on a nature hike on our scenic property, along the way the leader will teach plant identification, plant interdependence, deforestation and ecosystems.
Animal Science The group will learn about animal senses and how they use these for tracking. The group will then go on to learn about the web of life, survival of the fittest and ultimately how these lead to evolution.
Water Cycle

During this lesson students will be taken to various water ecology sites. They will compare and contrast these focussing on waterborne life, pH and pollution. The class will also discuss the water cycle, watersheds and erosion.

Geology

The class will hike to various sites of interest in order to find and discuss the 3 different rock types (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic). The class will also cover erosion and plate tectonice. The class ends at out 'Trout Creek' where participants will pan for gold.

Orienteering

The class starts off by learning about mapping and map reading. They then move onto compass use and calculating distances. The class culminates in a group treck around our orienteering course.

Survival Skills The group will be exposed to a survival situation where they will first discuss their survival needs then learn how to build effective shelters and fires. The class also covers various weather systems and what impact these will have on their survival.
Sensory Night Hike The group will be taken on a moonlit night hike. During the hike the participants will learn about how their eyes function and how they adapt to the dark. The group will also discuss the differences between diurnal and nocturnal animals and their eyes. The class ends with some star gazing and a discussion about the moon and the lunar cycle.

Our lessons are all fun, interactive and hand on projects. Work is mostly based outdoors but lesson plans can be modified to suite weather conditions.
